Advantages of Pastured Beef
There are many claims made for and against pastured beef, that range everywhere from religious zealotry hailing the benefits of grass fed beef to condemnation of carnivores in general, whether or not the former concern themselves with how the animal was raised be it on grass, grain or some combination thereof.
Essentially four types of beef are marketed by US beef producers (whether they are large or small): conventional, natural, certified organic and grass-fed beef. Within these markets there are additional “differences of opinion” about the safety and health claims each makes. That being said, there are a numerous reports both peer reviewed and non-reviewed, that claim grass-fed beef products contain elevated concentrations of Vitamin A:beta-carotene and Vitamin E:a-tocopherol, increased levels of omega-3 fatty acids, a more desirable omega-3:omega-6 ratio, and increased levels of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). The National Beef Council does not dispute this, although they do feel that some who make those claims exaggerate the degree of the benefits as compared to other production models.
Our primary goal is to simply offer beef direct to those who want to know where and how their meat was raised in a manner that is agreeable with their own values. Our production model does allow for the utilization of some grain, but always in a non-confined pastured environment.
